Back in 2011 on 3/16 Jhene Aiko gave the world a piece of her soul with her Sailing Souls Mixtape. I can still remember being way too eager to listen to her soft, sultry voice. I had been a fan of Jhene Aiko since my B2k semi-stalkerish days. I always waited for the arrival of new music and it was finally here!
Sailing Souls introduced Jhene Aiko giving listeners a taste of what was to come from the artist. Miguel and Kendrick Lamar both made appearances on the mixtape on two of my favorite tracks. Production from Fist Cuffs (who are also known for working with Miguel), Bei Major and Roosevelt.
Not only was the mixtape receiving positive reviews Jhene Aiko was also an independent artist. The concept off Sailing Souls mixtape was not only being an independent artist but also artistic freedom to be you. Almost two years after releasing Sailing Souls Jhene Aiko signed to NO I.D’s label ARTrium Records. At the time she did receive some criticism but it was most definitely showing growth and progression. Releasing her 7 track EP “Sail Out” that included her Grammy nominated song “The Worst”.
The very next year in 2014 Jhene Aiko gave fans her first studio length album “Souled Out”.
Over these past 6 years Jhene has grown as a singer/songwriter. Creatively speaking she has given her fair share of amazing songs and seems to never let me down. Last year in 2016 Big Sean and Jhene Aiko joined forces to become group “Twenty88”.
This is our ode’ in celebration of a great artist! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
